Hair loss has many causes ranging from family genetics to stress and medical issues. In men, androgenic alopecia usually begins with hair loss at the crown of the scalp and proceeds with a receding hairline along the temples, but male pattern alopecia is found in women as well. Both can be devastating to self-confidence and for men with hereditary baldness, a thinning and receding hairline can begin in their early twenties, giving a much older appearance.
In women, this infrequent but not uncommon condition can be devastating. There have been many proffered solutions for these conditions over the years with measured results, but platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy is bringing impressive results for both men and women who are seeing their hair thinning.
Dr. Lee will first look for an underlying cause of hair loss. He will order a set of labs that may reveal imbalances that are contributing to your hair loss and address each one. Quite often he will start you on a topical first.
Most of the injection treatments we perform for hair loss are platelet rich plasma. We often don’t need to do a full stem cell harvesting, isolation and injection, because the scalp has a very robust blood supply. A series of three PRP injections release an abundance of growth factors that may stimulate your viable hair follicles as much or more than a full stem cell therapy. When you see other hair growth practices advertising “PRP/Stem Cell Therapy”, red flags should be waving. While PRP will attract and stimulate stem cells, it is a PRP treatment, not a stem cell treatment. This is somewhat deceptive advertising.
Our PRP treatments are an exciting non-surgical therapeutic option. Often even hair transplant clinics will require these PRP therapies in conjunction with their transplants because of the improved results. PRP begins with Dr. Charles Lee drawing blood and centrifuging it to collect platelet rich plasma that is then injected using a thin needle into the scalp after it is numbed. Many practices just do micro-needling to the skin and rub the PRP on top. Dr. Lee views this as an inadequate therapy, because the PRP must get down deep into the dermis, follicle and supporting connective tissue.
With the release of stimulating growth factors promoting tissue regeneration and healing, PRP is often successful in promoting hair growth where it is currently thinning. It strengthens the hair follicles by regenerating the papilla which is the cup-like connective tissue structure in the dermis carrying the blood supply to the hair follicle. Completely bald patients may not benefit from PRP treatments or even complete stem cell therapy as a stand-alone therapy but may very much after a transplant procedure. Please see Dr. Lee if you are considering a transplant. All are not created equally. Dr. Lee has definite opinions on what type and where to pursue surgery, since he often helps with the follow-up PRP therapies.
If you are a candidate, the recommended PRP treatment plan typically consists of a package of three treatments spaced a few months apart. Dr. Lee will apply an anesthesia block or allow you to inhale nitrous oxide to help alleviate any discomfort during the procedure. Minoxidil and Propecia, both of which promote hair growth during the treatment period are often used in the topical treatments previously mentioned.
