Botox® Cosmetic

Approved by the FDA as early as 1989 for successfully treating muscle spasms, forms of Botox have also controlled severe underarm sweating for over 100 years, and was approved again in 2010 as a treatment for migraines. With a 65% satisfaction rating, Botox is a safe, effective solution for helping patients look younger non-surgically.

Fast & Simple Procedure

Typical injection sites include four or five spots along each side of the forehead and two or three spots on the eye and lip areas. A 30-year veteran anesthesiologist, Dr. Lee performs the injections himself and uses a topical anesthetic if preferred. An application of ice and pressure after the procedure helps control minimal bleeding or bruising.
The procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes. You will notice full effects in two to seven days and the effects last four to six months.

Overcoming the Myths

Botox treatments present only minor risks, and side effects are few and predictable. For instance, Botox is prepared using an albumin (egg) base, therefore, the procedure is not recommended for people allergic to eggs.

Treatments like Botox that seem “too good to be true” often come under scrutiny, leading to misunderstandings about Botox’s effects. One of those misconceptions is that Botox paralyzes or “freezes” the muscles in your face in an unnatural way that prevents your ability to form facial expressions.

Dr. Charles Lee is familiar with the misuse of any treatment that can lead to such extremes. Botox’s purpose is not to prevent facial expressions. As an experienced medical professional, Dr. Lee will prescribe a dosage that allows for adequate facial activity, but that prevents habitual grimaces and frowns that cause the unintended etchings of age-defining lines.

Other questions concern Botox treatments for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Tests do not show that Botox has a systemic reach to affect the fetus or a breast-feeding infant; however, Dr. Lee will not perform Botox treatments on expectant mothers.

Finally, Dr. Lee will not prescribe Botox for people with skin conditions or infections; who have asthma; who suffer from muscle and nerve diseases like ALS; who are anemic; or who plan to undergo plastic surgery. He will also check the patient’s current medications, vitamins, and supplements to assure there are no adverse interactions related to those prescriptions.

Follow-up with Dermal Fillers

It is important not to confuse Botox treatments, which relax the lines and wrinkles, with injectable Dermal Fillers like Restylane, Radiesse, Perlane, Sculpta, and Juvederm that plump up those lines and wrinkles so they are diminished or disappear altogether. For a longer lasting result, Dr. Lee prefers to follow Botox injections with fillers after the full results of the Botox have taken effect.
